SIR ROGER de COVERLY

    (VIRGINIA REEL)

An English and Scottish Country dance.  Gents in a line, facing the line of ladies. It is always the final dance of the evening.

Charles Dickens described this dance in his book, "A Christmas Carol". The highlight of the Christmas party was the "Sir Roger de Coverly", later known as the "Virginia Reel".

The most popular dance on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line during the Civil War was the Virginia Reel.
